Stacey. Tell us ABOUT yourself.
I've been designing leather clothing and jewellery for many years. I'm self-taught. I also dabble in photography and do most of my photos. Recently I designed a costume for hip hop artist, Nitty Scott that will be featured in an upcoming music video. My designs are unique. Some are inspired by the retro style of the 70's. I've also designed for dancers and pro body builders for performance costumes. I love working with Leather and have Cherokee heritage that traces back to the Wolf Clan.
Our readers would love to get to know you more Stacey. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?
I feel inspired by my Native American heritage as well as Bohemian and Hippie fashions. I've been a full-time artist and designer for over 20 years. I started my business while living on the island of Maui, so the Hawaiian culture was part of my early work. Now I'm in Northern California and love being near the mountains. I also have four Wolf Hybrids that I adore!
Stacey, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Designer?
I am passionate about old school style Leather work. It is a lost art. My work is very primitive, and I use techniques that are very Ancient. When I'm working, there are times when I feel the Ancestors in my studio! I love creating for performers who are also artists. I feel like I've been designing in one form or another my entire life. I even made many of my wild outfits in high school. But working with the leather is my favourite type of design. My ancestors believed in honouring the animals they hunted by using the entire thing, including the hide. Leather has clothed and even sheltered humans since the beginning.
Who is your inspiration in life Stacey? How do you keep inspired?
My mother, Nita, inspires me. She is a Warrior Goddess! I am also inspired by the power in all women.
We all make mistakes Stacey; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Designer, you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Honestly, I haven't had many colleagues. And I've been fortunate to have chosen well with the ones I've had!
Stacey , when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Designer, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
By being honest about your timeline for the client's design. I feel it's also very important to communicate my progress with the client.
Please tell us, Stacey, about a time you had to be very strategic to meet all your top priorities as a Designer?
I had to become very disciplined and work late hours to meet certain deadlines. And...had to skip my evening glass of wine on those days! It's also important for a creative person to take the time to reinvigorate and recharge to stay inspired and creative.
Stacey, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
If I have a vision, I am passionate about I am willing to take some input from the client, but bottom line, I am the designer. I have had people attempt to override with their ideas, and that just doesn't with my unique area of expertise. So, in the end, these clients have realised that.
Stacey, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Designer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
At the moment I'm very excited to see my Leather designs come to life in Nitty Scott's music video, La Diaspora from the soon to be released album Creature.
Stacey, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
Every day is creative for me. I start with an idea and a hide. Everything is done by hand.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Designer?
Believe in your work. Love your work. And strive to do your best... always.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state below what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I am always looking to collaborate with stylists, photographers and performers.
