I am a Visual Artist from Brooklyn, NY. Illustration is my specialty. I have practiced different facets of the creative spectrum for as long as I can remember. Art for me was innate, even at a young age. I used to love sewing clothes for my Barbie dolls and stuffed toys. As I reached puberty, my own personal style developed. I was heavily influenced by the fashion columns in celebrity gossip magazines and music videos. My parents would take us thrift shopping and I would find odd pieces and challenge myself to make them work.
My fashion sensibilities since my nascent stages have been cultivated by trial and error and life experience. I believe that God makes certain things prevalent in your life for a reason. So I began to think of how I could use my art and sartorial affinity to encite change in the world. Door13 is a clothing line that is dedicated to spreading awareness for causes that are dear to me. I would like to contribute to nature conservation and animal rights. Animals and nature are a part of this functioning system that is this Earth and it is our responsibility to nurture it! Every illustration has that energy injected into it. I want to spread the word! I also want to emphasize the importance of art as a driving force that propels human culture.
Our readers would love to get to know you more Shani-Ali. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?
I'm a multifaceted individual. I love glam and superficial things, but am also conscious of the fact that they can be used to improve our communities and the world on a grand scale. I also like a lot of different things, sometimes polar opposites. It allows me to connect with different personalities.
Shani-Ali, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Fashion Label?
It has been something that I always wanted. For a long time, I didn't have many leads on how to go about it successfully. I went through countless designs and finally arrived at a cohesive collection that I LOVE. Things just started making sense
Who is your inspiration in life Shani-Ali? How do you keep inspired?
My inspiration comes from my trifecta! My mom, dad and older brother. They support my dreams and they truly are my best friends. Nature, the original art crafted by God, also serves me constantly. There is so much mastery to see, it's humbling.
We all make mistakes Shani-Ali, we wish we could take back. Please tell us about a time being a Fashion Label , you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
I am a start-up so far so my label is still a baby without much experience. One thing for sure I know I need to work on is my communication and time-management! Especially as the head of the ship!
Shani-Ali ,when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Fashion Label, how do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?
Can we check back in a year lol?? Hopefully after I've had some boon of an influx of clients to speak of! I have worked in customer service for 10 years though, so I know I will understand the intricacies of customer relations.
Please tell us Shani-Ali, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Fashion Label?
I call them "little lists"! The habit has worked wonders for me! I can be forgetful and I have a lot on my plate. I don't have enployees yet so I am fully accountable. Knowing that I need to organize my time more wisely, I started writing myself little lists. To-do notes that I reference daily and check off daily.
Shani-Ali, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
Working in retail, as a style consultant, persuasiveness is a major key. I had a client come in that was specifically looking for a particular look. She was more reserved when it came to her appearance. I saw a pair or earrings that were cohesive with her aesthetic but were also a tad outside of her comfort zone. I urged her to try them on and she actually loved them. To reinforce it, I explained that the earrings could fit into different settings if styled smartly. Sometimes people need inspiration and information!
Shani-Ali please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Fashion Label. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share to everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest moment is and always will be STARTING. This will undoubtedly be an adventure! It takes guts to put yourself out there. I am sensitive about my art, it is very personal. But knowing that me overcoming fear could allow my art and my brand message to reach and connect with others pushed me to just do this thing!
Shani-Ali, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
My fashion blog is where I really get to wear many hats so to speak. I have to coordinate shoots, recruit photographers and models. I have to scout cool locations. I get to style the pieces and decide every visual factor and how it contributes to my original vision. It is difficult because it is all about aesthetic communication. Everthing has to have purpose and definitely is representative of my personality, so it's a lot of pressure. Coincidentally, that's exactly why it's so fun!
What advice would you give to the people who wants to be successful as a Fashion Label?*
Love yourself and love what you do. Fashion is a tough industry. But, it is subjective and you should know you DO belong. If you are operating with purpose, passion and love, you cannot lose because your intent is pure. Innovate! You have to be patient with yourself and the process. Love it love it and love it some more. It'll grow.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state below what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I want to create dope content with other creators, no matter the medium. I want to collaborate with people who want to give back in some way. We could be like a bunch of creative X-Men; each with their own genre of creativity who plan to change the world!
Now for the best part Shani-Ali! Please upload 5-10 photos so we can get to see your work.
