I am like an onion. When you think you have seen it all, there is another layer inside that waits to be revealed. And can I say more, the layer is fresher?
Olumide, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Creative Director?
I started while I was in my second year at the university. I schooled in the Republic of Benin. I loved to play with design software. I also had friends who were entrepreneurs, and I decided to help them push their various businesses with my design skills to be showcased on their social media blogs and platforms.
Who is your inspiration in life Olumide? How do you keep inspired?
I love creative interpretations of fashion campaigns. I go on youtube to watch award-winning commercials of fashion brands. While watching, I study and put my mind into the creative direction and what inspired that idea. Additionally, I discern ways the execution was possible and hope to be as good as that someday.
We all make mistakes Olumide; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Creative Director; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
There was this project I was working on for a fashion house, and my stylist was delaying and killing creative time. Very unappealing, I impatiently told the other models to style themselves because I was running late. I wished i have stayed patient.
Olumide, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Creative Director, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
Well, you are right, it could be challenging to maintain excellence across the board, that is why some clients would speak excellently, and some will speak otherwise. I guess this is just an unavoidable eventuality. I don't take a job I wouldn't be able to handle...especially when the client is tight on budget.
Please tell us Olumide, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Creative Director?
I don't underestimate the importance of delegation and coordination of responsibilities. So, in meeting top priorities, I gather the team, and I delegate responsibilities and follow up accordingly to ensure quality output.
Olumide, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
Okay, so there was a time we were on a project for a beer brand. Because I happened to be a comfortable beer consumer, I was able to give adequate insight into how to use creativity and engaging campaigns to push sales and create top of mind awareness to that particular beer brand in the midst of competitors.
Olumide, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Creative Director. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
A friend and I came up with a theme called Immaginazione, and the task was to interpret this theme with photography. It came out so right. Secondly, imagine we could cry diamonds and glitters. That was another theme that was interpreted using photography. I also directed photography for a top betting company in my country (Premier lotto), and the Job ran across all media and online platforms in Nigeria. This also made me proud. I was directly involved in a marketing campaign to drive sales for a top detergent brand (Sunlight) by Unilever, and it was a huge success.
Olumide, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I would love to mention when I was interpreting Imaginazione, it was by the sea, and it was very sunny the pictures were coming out harsh and not soft. This was difficult cos I could not get all my gears and diffuser across the border. ( i left Nigeria to shoot in the Benin Republic) So, we had to wait, and our shots depended on the movement of the sun. But it was exciting because we had to be alert and we paid a lot of attention to details.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Creative Director?
I would say....two things. Yes, two things you must have, namely, Skill and right Attitude. If u have the skill, but you don't have the right attitude, you won't go far. And if you have the right attitude and not skill, you also will not go far. But a combination of both will help you go far.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
Yes, of course, collaborations make us grow and develop in this industry. I am open to collaborations. Scratch your back, and you scratch mine, that is how we grow.
