Our readers would love to get to know you more Michael. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?
I grew up in a very small town in Alaska (less than 900 people). We don't even have a stoplight. I am a 2-time National Collegiate Cheerleading Champion. I got married last summer to my husband.
Michael, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Designer?
Honestly, I love to create ... whether that's shooting a new model or creating a new character, I became a freelance designer because I wanted to choose the projects that I work on to create the best work possible.
Who is your inspiration in life Michael? How do you keep inspired?
My mom ... I know it's cliche, but honestly, she is one of the most inspiring people I know. She has taught me the ability not only to be creative but how to balance that with business as well.
We all make mistakes Michael; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Designer; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
After four years of working with a client, I sent an email explaining that I was going to be raising my rates. Looking back, I should have had this discussion in person.
Michael , when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Designer, how do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?
Luckily, I choose the clients and projects that I work on. I will only take on a project if I know that I have the time to give it my all. I'd rather stay small and deliver quality than taking on the masses and just churn out mediocre work.
Please tell us Michael, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Designer?
Most of the time, I try to give myself enough time to fully produce a project, but there are those times that a client calls and needs something in the next few days or weeks. That is when you have to juggle your schedule, sometimes work late into the night, and often prioritize based on the timeline.
Michael, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
When working with a client, I try to deliver three things 1. What they ask for 2. Something that they may not have thought of 3. A happy medium. Most of the time, my clients will defer to my idea/concept because it's really why they hire me in the first place.
Michael please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Designer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share to everyone. What is it and why?
One of my recent exciting projects includes designing the practice wear for the Canadian Olympic Cheerleading Team to wear in Korea for the winter Olympics.
Michael, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
My job revolves around being creative. I love concept sketching and being challenged by my clients. A fun one that I did last year was a client that wanted an "S'mores" theme for their summer camp programs. I designed three characters (a marshmallow, a graham cracker, and a chocolate bar) that were used throughout the summer in different marketing materials.
What advice would you give to the people who wants to be successful as a Designer?
Practice! Learn! CHALLENGE YOURSELF!
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I'm always looking for something fun and exciting to work on ... I love meeting new model to shoot or clients that want to do something a little whimsical but still modern.
