I am a poet. Currently working on a book of poems titled TwentyFour.
Mayelin, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Model?
My passion is bioethics. I love it. I see it in everything; bioethics is the study of people. Of everyday decisions that we make either on a personal level or objectively. Modelling is something I always wanted to try but never had the confidence to do it. Nor the financial resources while growing up. Besides my dad told me I was too ugly to model. And that got to me. I felt hurt.
Who is your inspiration in life Mayelin? How do you keep inspired?
My younger sister is my inspiration. She's extremely focused, studious and smart. She's also very caring and humble. I aspire to be as great as her. She goes to Princeton. And I want to go to Yale Law School.
We all make mistakes Mayelin; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Model; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Well, when I was in the Dominican Republic, I got to witness an entirely different side to modelling than I had seen before. It was difficult getting sponsors and attention from our director. If I could go back in time, I would be more patient.
Mayelin, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Model, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
It's all about organising yourself
Please tell us Mayelin, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Model?
The time I was competing for The Miss DR universe title was very chaotic. I had to organise myself. Plan travel dates and budget myself well. It was four months of strategic planning. With social media and with Pageant prepping too.
Mayelin, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
As an academic scholar working in the field of ethics, there's always a challenge. One of the most challenging Is the topic of abortion. I am pro-choice, and abortion is a very delicate topic. Most physicians try to avoid the conversation and don't want to practice it. But as an ethicist, I have to dwell on this and offer the best suggestions to the clinicians.
Mayelin, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Model. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest moment was winning the Miss Reality Show at the Miss DR universe because I worked hard. It was an everyday challenge to get the videos posted. Either it was an issue with the internet, or we had no power.
Mayelin, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I'm always trying to be creative with the things I do. I try to stay positive and use personal experiences and real-life scenarios to get my point across. That's what I do when speaking at conferences. And when I make videos, I speak from the heart.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Model?
I would say be persistent. Don't make radical choices. And stay true to yourself
