One thing that I found pretty unique in myself is the way I understand people. I can put myself in somebody else's shoes and fully understand their perspective. With fashion, I can use it as a tool to help people feel confident. That is one of the reason why I started my hobby of fashion photography. I really enjoy making others feel good. When I see people feeling more confident in themselves, I feel like I have done something right. There has been many times in my life where I always felt like I was never really good at something. I never felt talented or really smart. I was always adaptive to everything and decent in everything I do. For instance, I'm not terrible at Math, Science, English, or History but neither am I so good at it. Same thing with art. I loved drawing but I was never very good nor terrible at it. I was just decent. It got to a point where I was tired of being decent. I wanted to find that talent in me. I wanted to find out more about myself and discover what is that one thing that I am very good at. College came and I discovered my love for fashion.
Maggie, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Fashion Stylist?
I started as a fashion stylist when more and more people keep asking me for styling tips. I started to notice that I'm always that one friend that everyone runs to for fashion tips. In addition, people always compliment my style what I wore almost every single day; even on days when I feel like I'm not dressed up. I wanted to spread my perspective of fashion to everyone, but I wasn't sure how. I decided to use Instagram as a tool to engage my followers in my fashion posts and also inspiring them with new fashion trends. My passion is making people look and feel good. When I see smiles on people's faces, it marks an impact on me heavily. Seeing people happy lightens up my day and makes me feel like the world can be a moment of peace. A smile means a lot of me, and if I could make an individual genuinely smile, it would make me the happiest person.
Who is your inspiration in life Maggie? How do you keep inspired?
This is honestly the toughest question that I've been asked multiple times before and I never knew what the right answer was. I used to make it up and pretend that I knew what I was saying. It took me a while to realize the truth. A friend of mine asked me this question one night, and I told him that I don't have anyone that I look up to for inspiration. I always felt like I was inspiring others but i never got inspired by a specific someone constantly. He told me that maybe I was my own inspiration and that my drive towards success and my work ethic was what motivated me daily. I looked at him real hard and smiled. I realized that what he had said was the answer all along. I never looked at it that way before and thinking about it made so much sense. I am my own inspiration because of how passionate and spontaneous I am. I am always talking to myself. As lame as that sounds, I like to give myself pep talks. i write in my journal and I think myself to sleep every night. Before I sleep, I always reflect and think positively.
We all make mistakes Maggie; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Fashion Stylist; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Mistakes are my favorite way of learning. When I make a mistake, the lesson behind it stays with me throughout time. There was a time when I had to cancel an appointment with a model because I forgot my friend’s birthday party was on the same day. After cancelling, we tried rescheduling but had to cancel again. That experience made me appear unprofessional. I probably appeared flakey since I did not keep my word. But in reality, that was not the case. I just had a hard time managing school, work, social life, clubs, and my fashion photography page. From that experience, I learned to be more organised. I wrote down a list of people I had to schedule appointments with and wrote their names down on the days we agreed to meet up. From that, I can expect when I will be shooting days before and can plan around those appointments in order to not cancel with models.
Maggie, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Fashion Stylist, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
When working with a large number of clients, I sometimes get anxious, and I start to stress out. But recently I have found different ways to keep myself organised. I keep a planner and every week when I schedule shoots with clients; I write it down on my weekly calendar. I also keep a checklist of which models I have already worked with. This helps me keeps track of who else I need to get to. The list is in order of who reached out to me first. This way my clients are not waiting forever for me to get back to them. During shoots, I like to make sure they feel comfortable. I make sure each outfit piece is something they are okay with wearing. For ladies, I try to keep the makeup to right comfort level. This way they can feel 100% confident in front of the camera.
Please tell us, Maggie, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Fashion Stylist?
As a student, part-time worker, and also keeping up my hobby as a fashion stylist is a very time to consume and tiring. Time management is crucial for success. I always make sure my assignments are done for the week, and on the weekends I can focus on only Fashion Styling. I also work all of my hours Monday to Friday.
Maggie, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
At my current job at the student centre, I work with many people. My team is very diverse, and we all share different opinions. At the beginning of the semester, our work schedules were all over the place. It was messy and not organised. I felt that it was not fair and decided to speak up on behalf of my coworkers and I. I addressed the concerns to multiple managers respectfully and professionally. One of the Senior Manager recognised that I was concerned and wanted to resolve the issue without stirring up any more complications.
Maggie, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Fashion Stylist. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest professional accomplishment as a Fashion Stylist would be working with different photographers in the Tri-state area and also with experienced and non-experienced models. I learned how to model myself first and get a feel of what it is like to be in front of the camera. This allowed me to assist inexperienced models and help them to feel more comfortable and confident. Through weekly practices, I have gotten better and better each time. Being able to see my models grow in confidence makes me so proud of my work.
Maggie, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I am not only a fashion stylist, but I also do makeup and hair for my models. I also take pictures of my work. I give them all in one package deal for my models. This allows me to be creative in more than one field. Also being a model myself allows me to explore new poses and vibes.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Fashion Stylist?
To those who wish to become a fashion stylist, I advise you to keep exploring. Never stop creating either. These two things are the key to building your success. The more you explore, the more open-minded you become and the more inspired you become. Do not stop creating because you do not want to stop the momentum of creative ideas. Keep your motivation going so that you can keep being inspired.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I am always looking for collaboration. I would love to work in a dressing room or even work alongside with photographers.
