What is unique about me is the fact that I have never done anything like this before. In the last month I, have discovered something that I am exceedingly good at and I have never taken courses or been to university. It is purely my talent. I specialise in urban streetwear, and I am dedicated to building a brand based in London and extending over to the US. In such a short amount of time I, already have growing interest in other countries other than the UK and it is exciting to see where this journey will take me!
Jay, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Designer?
As I previously mentioned before I started designing after I decided to create an online blog/feed. As my followers grew, I decided I needed more professional and custom logos for my page. To my surprise when I ventured on to various software and apps designing clothes just seemed to come too easy to me! With this, I discovered a new talent and a new passion. I have always been passionate about fashion but never thought as a 24-year-old man with no education in the industry that this would be a career choice for me but hey! Here I am! Since making designs that were simply too good to be a profile picture I decided the next step would be to create and launch my very own urban streetwear brand!
Who is your inspiration in life Jay? How do you keep inspired?
My inspiration in life is success itself. Because if there were no success, there would be no inspiration!
We all make mistakes Jay; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Designer; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
I think my biggest regret so far was not recognising my talent earlier on in life so I could have perhaps gone to university and studied the industry to a higher standard!
Jay, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Designer, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
Well, I try never to take on more than I can handle. I like a challenge, but when it interrupts with the quality of work I am providing for clients that have to be addressed and managed efficiently
Please tell us, Jay, about a time you had to be very strategic to meet all your top priorities as a Designer?
Well, I suppose the most recent transition on my social media blog. I took on free marketing for a clothing company purely to build up my social media page and appeal to the relevant market. In a matter of weeks with the power of marketing and advertisement, I strategically changed the nich of my blog and created a fashion outlet for the urban medical cannabis community!
Jay, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
I started off a blog with a friend who wanted to take it down a different path than I did. So instead of stomping my feet and throwing my toys out of the pram, I suggested that we both come up with a plan of action (business plan) on where we wanted the page to go and how we planned on getting it there. My plan was better than his so I won haha.
Jay, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Designer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest moment so far is taking the plunge and turning my clothing brand into a full-time business.
Jay, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I always get to be creative with my work. As I don't work for clients, I design my brand and have total creative freedom which is another reason I love doing what I do!
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Designer?
I would say be different, be confident, be consistent, network, always think big. And believe in your talent!
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
Yeah, sure I'm always looking to network and collab with other designers, artists and company's I think it's great experience also great for your confidence and your portfolio!
