I'm consistently looking for the better version of myself, especially in my job. I don't know what comfort zone is for me, that's why I always push myself beyond the limits. I would say that my unique part of the character is honest. My motto is "What you do not want to be done to yourself, do not do to others."
Gaia, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Make-up Artist?
My big passions are fashion, art and makeup. When I was 14 I remember watching some makeup tutorials on YouTube, I got inspired, and I bought my first little kit of brushes and products. I started doing makeup on my friends before going out or for some special occasions, just for fun. After my graduation from the high school I knew exactly what to do: follow my passion and my dream.
Who is your inspiration in life Gaia? How do you keep inspired?
I like to browse Instagram, reading fashion magazines, cooking, going to museums and look at nature ( sunset and sunrise times are my favourite moments to get inspired)
We all make mistakes Gaia; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Make-up Artist; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Back in the past, I was 19, and I thought that being skilled was enough to succeed.I've learnt that having the right attitude is the first quality needed in my job especially when I work with a team.
Gaia, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Make-up Artist, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
One time I had to do the makeup on 25 models for a beauty contest, I just had 4 hours, and I was the only makeup artist. I just focused on one model at a time and forgot the amount of clients left not to get confused.
Please tell us, Gaia, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Make-up Artist?
One time I was doing a makeup trial on a bride, she was very needy as every bride, and she had the exact makeup type in her mind, but she wasn't able to explain it to me. After three trials we finally decided the makeup together, and the day of her wedding when I finished the makeup she looked at the mirror, and she was so happy that she cried.I will never forget that moment. I think we meet all our top priorities when we build that connection with the client, model or friend based on our professional skills and truly accomplish what they wish.
Gaia, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
I had a client that always used to wear eyeliner that wasn't recommended for her type of eyes. When I did her makeup, I explained to her why wasn't appropriate for her, and She still wanted the eyeliner.I did the type of makeup She wanted in half face and the type I was thinking in the other half, She saw the difference and understood what and why I was suggesting the other makeup, and we proceed with the look that I suggested. This was the most challenging makeup in my entire career.
Gaia, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Make-up Artist. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest moment was when I'd been nominated as a chief makeup artist for a fashion show during the fashion week in Rome from the academy I was attending. It's my proudest moment so far because after months of hard working and nights spent crying; I finally felt that someone (my teacher) noticed me after all the struggle.
Gaia, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I needed to prepare artistic makeup to include in my portfolio for the final exam at the makeup academy in Rome. I had six days left and did not know what to do to be inspired, so I went for a walk outside. Before going back home, I went to a library and read a book on "Pointillism" I got so inspired that I decided to do the makeup with that exact technique. It took me 5 hours to complete it and so far it's one of my favourite shot!
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Make-up Artist?
I highly suggest keeping going no matter what, who and why. People don't like to see you successful, so they will try to put you down.I also recommend to be surrounded by positive people and keep learning every day (I think in this job we never stop learning) Also don't forget to stay humble :)
