Fides Linien

For me, particularly in my artwork, all ideas about, female‘ and, feminine‘ are associated with identity, gender issues and constructs, as well as the sociocultural development of women in society.

My name is Fides Linien, and I studied Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden for five years. After graduating, I did my Master Studies (Meisterschülerstudium) in two years to specialise in my topics and in my special artistic technique to work with handmade paper. Since 2007 I´m working with this technique, I call it ‚CartaStaminea’. I´m processing transparent artworks, which are delicate paper works made of handmade paper with inlaid cotton or silk yarn. They can be regarded as two or three-dimensional artworks.

Because of my high interest in fashion and design, I completed an education in Visual Merchandising at the german fashion brand ESCADA after my studies of Fine Art. In most of my coloured graphic works, but also in the paper works, in particular, I´m concerned with the design, fashion and style, implementation and concealment and the covering and decoration of the body. Regarding the content of my artworks, my works focus on our conceptions of , female‘ and , feminine‘ aesthetics, both natural and artificially created.

I´m specialised in

• Fashion & Style
• Design & Novel Aesthetics
• Papermaking & Screenprint
• Visual Merchandising & Creative Marketing

Our readers would love to get to know you more Fides. Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far.
For me, particularly in my artwork, all ideas about, female‘ and, feminine‘ are associated with identity, gender issues and constructs, as well as the sociocultural development of women in society. I, as a woman, know this very well. We are living in a very visual orientated world, where beauty is of a higher value.

As an artist, I´d like to unveil the secret of female beauty and the issues connected with it. Therefor style, fashion, and the female body will always hold on appeal and relevance for me as an artist. They are universal and essential topics, which influence and shape our lives.

What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field Fides?
As an artist and as muse - as a person inspiring others - I see myself as part of the society reflecting on its idols and ikons. Still, in this entire world, there are a lot of different worlds existing side by side. I´m trying to make worlds melt into one another to create novel aesthetics, make people change perspectives and invent new ways of perceptions.
I´m currently thinking about a charity project to set up an art workshop at Uganda, to open young people windows and show them prospects how to use their creativity and how to make more out of it. I strongly believe in the power of any creativity for change and future developments.

How do you communicate with people Fides? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?
The shape of my artistic paperwork tells you: I am patient, indeed.
People say I´m friendly - not so?
I´m very openminded to any new perspectives and any ideas, but also to traditions. To be openminded to people and the world is the requirement for enhancement.

If you had to do it over again, what would you change Fides?
I´d get up even earlier.

Who is your hero Fides, and how have they helped you get to where you are?
My hero is not one person, it is many - they are heroines. I admire strong women, I believe in the female power and the principle of fertility in any shape. But over all, I´m muse of my own.

How important are creative education courses Fides? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful?
Creative courses are very important. All my life and my education have been like that. Many people in your life show you paths. But you have to take the path yourself. In any case, creative courses are useful, but there is one thing for sure: you have to be talented and passionate about what you´re doing. Otherwise, none of a course makes sense to you at all. Do what you love, and it´ll love you back.

Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry?
Be passionate about what you´re doing. Be self-confident. Be patient. Be innovative. Be openminded. Be authentic. Reach out to your costumers by touching their minds, their hearts.
