I've always been interested in the fashion and modeling world because of its a creative outlet for people who like to push boundaries. I've been someone who didn't always fit in but had very weird stylistic choices. I'm always wearing new types of clothes and wore things that didn't pin point me into a certain category. I new I wanted to model since I was young and eventually was in 3 fashion runway shows in New York, commercials for banks, printed in edgy magazines for clothing and jewelry, as well as runways for local clothing companies.
Our readers would love to get to know you more Dilan. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?
For me, modeling is all about creative self-expression and seeing the world through the designers perspective by wearing their clothes or by the photographer's vision. I want to be apart of the world of fashion because of the expansiveness of it. Its forever changing and I want to surround myself with it. Being from a small town in Canada with a population of 100 you wouldn't necessarily think that I would have something to say in the fashion world, but that's whats so cool about it, you have people from so many different backgrounds from and from places you wouldn't expect.
Dilan, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Model?
I just love to create. I love to be apart of the creative aspects of the photo shoots, knowing that I get to bring pieces of myself into it while being apart of someone else's work is pretty dang awesome. Outside of my modeling career I still just create. I've been doing my own, my friends and families hair since I was like 15, taught myself how to cut, dye, style all of it. I even do extensions. I started to design my clothes when I was young too; I would take shirts and cut the sleeves off or dye them and mix them with other things I could find in thrift shops. The whole process is just fun for me.
Who is your inspiration in life Dilan? How do you keep inspired?
I'm inspired by the people who show their collections in hopes that someone understands it. Its almost like they bare all in front of the world knowing they will be criticized by the top dogs in the fashion industry. There is something vulnerable about it, and I hope that one day I will be able to share my vision as well.
We all make mistakes Dilan; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Model; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Haha oh gosh, Well... off the top of my head I remember when I was shooting for a commercial me and the other models had a few drinks at the hotel bar and then ended up skinny dipping in the pool. Haha. It was quite funny but looking back it probably wasn't the most professional.
Dilan, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Model, how do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?
I always ask the clients upfront for their expectations of me. I want to know exactly what the want and then I can deliver on all parts. I think that my background in psychology has helped me out but I am a people person, and I've learned that it's important to pick up on peoples vibes so that you know to interact with each person individually.
Please tell us Dilan, about a time you had to be very strategic to meet all your top priorities as a Model?
I'm a firm believer that they way you think and feel about each situation effect the outcome tremendously. So for me being strategic would be to stay thinking positive in every work situation. Back when I flew to New York, I had three fashion shows in a two day period along with meetings and rehearsals. This was my first time in the city and my first fashion show, so it became overwhelming pretty quickly. But I knew I had to change my thoughts about it, and I just kept telling myself that it was easy and that it would all work out and it did.
Dilan, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
My mom had always said that I should work in sales because I could convince a fisherman to buy my fish. I guess I have the gift of gab or something, but I usually can convince people that my way is better. I'm all about ease and efficiency in my work place so if something isn't easy I try to come up with a better solution then the one that is in place. When I worked in a Mental health center as a Crisis Stabilization Worker, we had a whole intake packet for our clients that was a drag, and super lengthy I simplified it all and then presented it to my boss and told her that we should use mine instead, and it worked.
Dilan, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Model. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
A local clothing company had called me and asked for me specifically because they liked my previous work, it was just one of those "holy crap" moments because I have wanted to be a model for so long and it made me realize... dang, I'm doing it now. Im a model.
Dilan, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
There was a time I was shooting for a magazine and some of the shots I was allowed to pick my outfits; I just thought it was pretty cool because I could showcase my style, a bit more of who I am, in something that tons of people were going to be looking at.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Model?
I would say Just be authentic! People can see right through you if you're not just being yourself. I find that people just begin to gravitate towards you once you start just being yourself. It took me awhile to get it, and I still have my moments of doubt, but I've seen that in the situations I doubt myself is when it doesn't work out the way you wanted it to.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
Yess!!! Id love to collaborate way more than I'm currently doing. Id love to go to countries I've never been to, to do some work and to work with a culture I've never seen. But I'm down to work on small local projects as well.
Now for the best part Dilan! Please upload 5-10 photos so we can get to see your work.
