I am a graphic designer with dreams of launching a clothing line with all the resources I need. I got my degree at Louisville Technical school as well as a Bachelor's in IT security. I am currently in school for my Master's degree in Business Management and graduate June 2019. I design and draw abstract urban style creations and use zazzle to print my designs. This restricts what I truly want to design, but I am looking for that big break through and funding one day. I have unique and one of kind designs that would blow the minds of many in my opinion. I have been doing this for a year and have sold designs globally. I used to work for the government designing for the US Navy. I do photography, drawing, along with graphics and combine them all for unique pieces I wish to show the world. 101 clothing has a ring to it and has a copyright already. I am just hoping to catch a break to reach my full potential!
Our readers would love to get to know you more Derek. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?
I have an anxiety disorder and look to designing as a calming release. I have fought this my whole life and always look to help others who have the same anxieties. I grew up in Las Vegas and currently live in a small town in Indiana where I design our of my home. Battles with alcoholism that I used to fight anxiety has built my character and imagination for designing to the extreme. I am currently 1 year sober and still creating everyday. I can relate to many in the world and I'm as real as it gets.
Derek, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Designer?
My passion is to take the complicated mind of human beings and display it creatively so people can feel the expressions through my art work. I hope that it relates to the chaos in their minds and acts as a therapeutic release. I became a graphic designer after finding a love for drawing and creating as a kid. I spent alot of time alone die to social anxiety and dove straight into art. I studied graphics at age 17 for my first degree.
Who is your inspiration in life Derek? How do you keep inspired?
My family are my inspiration and the people who suffer in this crazy world. I see beauty in the chaos and try to bring it to life to tell the story of those who suffer. I inspire to help people in any form I can.
We all make mistakes Derek, we wish we could take back. Please tell us about a time being a Designer , you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Some clients can be overly picky and not understanding to the needs for certain designs. I regret any frustration I may have displayed.
Derek ,when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Designer, how do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?
Working for the Navy I had 200 people in my division so I had tons of projects coming in. I prioritised by time management. I did the urgent projects first followed by the less urgent. I had multiple projects going at one time.
Please tell us Derek, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Designer?
One project needed several machines to create the piece that my office lacked. I made calls around the base to different divisions and buildings and drove around to each building to use their machine to create the final product. Lots of running around to meet that deadline for the display I created.
Derek, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
It's a simple as telling them a certain color will work better than another by catching the eye of the customer faster. I taught them color theory and how you have to catch someone's attention within seconds or else the display is useless.
Derek please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Designer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share to everyone. What is it and why?
Filming a project at Fort Bragg NC feauring our special forces running exercises. I filmed and helped design the presentation materials that displayed our military using new technology. It was a 6 week project.
Derek, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I've had many opportunities to be free with my work as a freelance artist and fashion designer for 101 clothing. It is therapeutic and I love every minute of it. Designing logos for area companies are always fun.
What advice would you give to the people who wants to be successful as a Designer?
Be yourself and be true. Let it pour out from you heart and soul. Be able to handle critiscm as well.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state below what type of collaboration you are looking for?
