Hi. It's always hard for me to introduce where I come from, but I'm always tempted to try. Mixed, 1/4 English, 1/4 Korean, 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 Hong Kong Chinese, I was born in the beautiful city of Hong Kong, grew up in UK, Asia and Europe and lived, adventured in many places all my life. I studied Psychology in Oxford, England and now live and travel the world whenever my wanderlust calls. I am based in HK.Apart from fashion modeling, I'm also a professional poker player, 9 to 5 at office simply isn't me. Freedom is what I cherish the most in life and I enjoy the freedom my work gives me. It doesn't mean it's easy, though. In fact, it requires dedication, solid hard work, and years of studying to make it to where I am today.I'm a free, adventurous soul that appreciates the beauty of simplicity. And it shows in my style. I only wear black, period. For the colour black reflects my character, dark, a little mysterious, seemingly simple but not so. I believe style is knowing and owning who you are. Oftentimes people would compliment on how I fit the all-black style yet they would ask, 'Don't you get bored of wearing only black though?'And my answer is always simple. 'It is who I am. I own it. And I 'll never get bored of it.'I believe in spontaneity and possibilities. I intend to fill my life with priceless experiences to remember and captivating stories to tell, not things to show. Deliberate normality and conscientious stupidity repel me. So despite the fact that I only wear black, I often throw in signature pieces like a black bandana, or a felt hat to make the whole outfit shine. When it comes to open-mindedness guess you can tell already I'm absolutely not one to shy away from anything new. Perspectives and people with originally fascinate me. And that's what brought me to fashion. This is Derek. Peace. x
Derek, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Model?
I believe in spontaneity and possibilities. I intend to fill my life with priceless experiences to remember and captivating stories to tell, not things to show. Deliberate normality and conscientious stupidity repel me. I strive to live it to the fullest. And that's my only life goal. I was first scouted on the streets of Tokyo when I was munching on a cheeseburger ;)
Who is your inspiration in life Derek? How do you keep inspired?
I stare into the stars. And remind myself how small I am and how much there is to learn and experience.
We all make mistakes Derek; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Model; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
Going to a job at 7 am straight after an all-night party was not the most professional thing I've done, but it was a great lesson.
Derek, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Model, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
Work with a smaller amount of clients. Quality Quantity.
Please tell us, Derek, about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Model?
There's this one time when I had to choose between studying for tomorrow's exams, going to my friends' birthday party, or applying the mask and grooming my hair for tomorrow's shoot.I chose neither and fell straight asleep. ;) And it wasn't necessarily a bad move because I can't stress how important good sleep is for modelling. It fuels you with energy, makes you look better and pumps your confidence up.
Derek, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
One time I had a shoot in leather jacket at the beach, and I spontaneously soaked my hair wet with the sea water and the result turned out great.
Derek, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Model. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
My proudest moment was simple. It was when I got scouted. I 'll never forget that day :)
Derek, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
The leather jacket shoot. :)
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Model?
Own who you are. Know who you are. And embrace it.
