I believe that you can find beauty in everyone and everything. Photographing to me is capturing a moment in time and space, a memory that will make someone smile, love, or simply feel.
Carlos, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Photographer?
My aspirations in life are simple, live, love and love some more. I started shooting in high school, was first published right after and turned my life into capturing moments.
Who is your inspiration in life Carlos? How do you keep inspired?
Wow, this is a loaded question. Early in my years of photography, the images of Richard Avedon and Gordon Munro inspired me. After I developed my style, the inspiration came from personalities of people. It did not matter if I was shooting a fashion model or the guy sweeping the streets, their personality is what brightened my imagination.
We all make mistakes Carlos; we wish we could take back. Please tell us about time being a Photographer; you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
I fell in love with an Art Director, so badly that I asked her out without even looking at her finger. She could have been my biggest client, so I blew it love wise and work wise!
Carlos, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Photographer, how do you go about prioritising your clients’ needs?
As long as you have a great producer working with you, life is easy. If a client tells me that they only have $2 for a job and it requires a minimum of $3 I have to think about taking the work. Usually, if they approve the necessary cuts to shoot it for $2, then we can talk about it. The real trick about handling clients is seriously a great producer.
Please tell us, Carlos, about a time you had to be very strategic to meet all your top priorities as a Photographer?
Several years ago I had three shots within two weeks. All were 6 figure budgets, so each had at least two producers assigned to them. Fortunately, I believe in teamwork and my assistants are all amazing shooters. My issue was making sure I could fly from one location to the other in time. My crew always had everything ready for me when I arrived, regardless was scary as I always like to please!
Carlos, please give us an example of a time when you were able to persuade someone to see things your way at work successfully.
I never had an issue with this. Clients also look for me as a Creative Director, so my input is very important to my clients. Also, diplomacy works great. And simply, I don't make decisions that are not well thought of whatever I am shooting. If there is ever a doubt, well, we shoot it both ways if we have the time.
Carlos, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Photographer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
It is always the last job I did. But if one comes to mind was shooting a homeless artist whose culture was incredible, his personality immensely beautiful and the images made everyone cry after I told them his story.
Carlos, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I am always creative with my work. Some measure creativity by the time it takes them to develop their art; I measure it by how I communicate with an image.
What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Photographer?
Assist others, be humble, and always keep learning. Never believe you know it all. Even after 20+ years of shooting, I would still assist some photographers older and younger than me just to learn from them. Of course, I am not learning technique, I am learning about the personality and why people behave in certain ways. OK, that is not fully true, I do learn some techniques from areas of photography that I am not experienced on.
Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I am always collaborating; I like keeping busy as much as I can and am the happiest behind the camera. These days I find myself doing both stills and video, shooting for editorial, commercial, narrative TV and others. Without collaboration, this would not be possible.
