ABOUT
AM photography is headed by, Alexandra Mantoura. A young Australian artist & contemporary photographic talent, setting out to become one of Sydney’s sought-after street style, lifestyle, still life & fashion photographers.

Nostalgic for flavour as a pop artist, Alexandra translates her signature style to rework & set apart Clients who are something dynamic & vibrant.

Her work is characterized by bold, simple, everyday imagery & strong colour theory used both Opposing & Complementary. Alexandra strives to emphasise different elements in contemporary culture. Helping narrow the divides between commercial & fine art.

Alexandra also writes blog articles accompanied by photo stories as well as heading political campaigns & street art initiatives.

Yes

Our readers would love to get to know you more Alexandra. Tell us about yourself, what is unique about you?

I am akin to the female version of Austin Powers with a camera.

Alexandra, what are your passion and aspiration in life? How did you start as a Photographer?

I think passion is something that both soothes me but can also prove very painful. Passion & obsession have always been very thin lines, I balance on. It's a dangerous conundrum. My passion is art & colour. The camera for me was the perfect tool to explore what I was afraid of about the world & turn it into something beautiful. Transmuting object & people into gods and idols.

Who is your inspiration in life Alexandra? How do you keep inspired?

People inspire me! I'll go out in the middle of the city ( Sydney or Melbourne) at peak hour & simply people watch, sometimes with my camera, sometimes without. Classical fine art is a huge one for me, even though my look is very contemporary & fresh. Looking at artists ( namely painters) of another age, the craft, the handwork, the love, the sorrow - really puts into perspective how far we've come or fallen back as a human race. Technology confuses me & takes away all the childlike wonder away. Don't abuse it!!

We all make mistakes Alexandra, we wish we could take back. Please tell us about a time being a Photographer, you wish you’d handled a situation differently with a colleague.
There's just a limitless amount of angles you can take when dealing with ''colleagues''. I've got little time as an active artist to look back & regret or ruminate over wishing things went differently. I'm sure I've made many mistakes either strategically or subconsciously. But I try to improve myself as a person every day & learn to own my decisions.

Alexandra, when you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. As a Photographer, how do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?

It is difficult. I negotiate. I shuffle around. I stay up on the computer in my shitty small apartment & get no sleep. I live & breathe photography so I think prioritising, time-wise, is a good move, but never ever compensate for quality. You as an artist will only suffer in the end.

Please tell us, Alexandra , about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities as a Photographer?

Every photographic priority for me is equal. My perfectionist mind wouldn't dare to let me have it any other way. I am not so strategic in meeting all of my deadlines but more just resign to the fact that it's always a long hard labour of love. the process excites me just as much as the result so often, it doesn't even feel like a ''job''.

Alexandra, please give us an example of a time when you were able to successfully persuade someone to see things your way at work.
I use my emotional intelligence most of the time. Mixed in with an undying obsession with logic, morals & sense. I am very opinionated & don't mind some persuading, but it's hard to my benefit. If I was to push something it would be an idea or philosophy.

Alexandra, please tell us about your proudest professional accomplishment as a Photographer. There might be many, but there is always this proudest moment that you just want to share with everyone. What is it and why?
As amateurs, we fantasize. But as professionals we envision. So I think the pivotal & most satisfying professional accomplishment for me was after a long editorial fashion shoot. As I was reviewing the photographs, I finally realised I had the power to make an exact idea or image in my head a reality with photography. The exact image in my mind had come to fruition. My creativity, for the first time, wasn't compromised by myself or anyone else. That's when I realised I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

Alexandra, please give us an example of a time you were able to be creative with your work. What was exciting or difficult about it?
I am creative with my work every day and it just gets more exciting.

What advice would you give to the people who want to be successful as a Photographer?

Learn, technically how to master the camera. That box is your tool. Once you know the rules, you also know how to break them. Avoid focusing solely on the results or comparing your work to others & instead really value and respect the process. I would say, avoid trends and go for style. keep it simple and JUST DO IT. Stop procrastinating about the cropping or the frame. Get it out there. Don't take your work too seriously or get too sentimental about it because even if you're the juiciest peach, some people just don't like peaches.

Are you looking for collaboration with fashion talents, brands and creatives? If yes, please state what type of collaboration you are looking for?
I do want to communicate and collaborate with more labels and brands who want to rework or give their range/line or label some a playful & kooky edge. I am looking for a solid team to execute fashion editorials, someone with an art direction and film background.

Now for the best part Alexandra! Please upload 5-10 photos so we can get to see your work.
